Places To See Before You Die — The Great Wall of China

1000 Places To See Before You Die
The Great Wall of China P. 484
Many don’t understand the magnitude of the Great Wall of China.  Stretching over three thousand miles, the Great Wall has been climbed by millions all over the world.  When I tried to climb the Wall, it was a true test of my physical ability.  When you first see the Wall you think “yeah this is doable”.  I probably walked (more like crawled) the first two miles of the Wall.  Many people think the the Wall is just a couple of stairs, however every step is either a step up or step down.  There are checkpoint areas that are flat, but those only last for three seconds.  With a 45 degree incline, I kept being passed by many Chinese locals.  A Chinese student that was in my same tour group translated that the locals were saying “Hurry up, foreigners.” However when I finally reached one of the checkpoints of the Wall that looked over the mountains and the wall stretching out into the distance, I could see how this is considered one of the seven wonders of the world.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would do again in a heart beat. — Annie
